Sample Sunday | A Little While Longer

His lips grazed my forehead as we gently swayed from side to side. I was hoping he would’ve continued talking and revealed whatever had been bothering him the past few months but I was just thankful for the small progress that had been made. I looked at him, opening my mouth to speak when his phone began ringing. As he normally did, he silenced it but when it began ringing seconds later, I urged him to answer. I was understanding to the fact he was a busy man and didn’t want him missing out on an important call. Though, I’m not sure if the same could be said for if this were a few moments ago when he expressed some sort of emotion to me. Carlos excused himself to the kitchen to talk while I prepared to go upstairs and wait on him.

The second my hand was on the railing; I could faintly hear the doorbell chiming followed by a loud pounding. Neither of us were expecting visitors and the sound was enough for Carlos to return while wrapping up his call. I looked through the peephole only to see no one was on the other side. As I unlocked the door to make sure that there really wasn’t anyone outside, Carlos phone began ringing again. I didn’t care to listen in on the conversation, too busy smiling at the large assortment of tulips and daisies that had been left on the porch. They were my favorite flowers and proved to be a reminder that hope wasn’t lost for me and Carlos after all.

Following the sound of his voice, I was entering the kitchen so that I could put the flowers into a larger vase. Carlos’ eyes cut at me as I winked him. Flowers were another pleasantry I’d been without so I was probably more happy than I should’ve been but I didn’t care. I was just glad to know he thought enough about me to put in the effort to have them ordered. As I prepared to place the original vase on the counter, the attached card fell from it’s holder before landing on the ground. I went to pick it up with my free hand, opening it so that I could read what I assumed to be a sweet message. One where he was telling me how much he loved me. Valued me. Appreciated me. What I got instead was a message so shattering I almost passed out.

I’m sorry you have to find out like this but since Carlos won’t tell you, I will. My daughter deserves to have her father around and me? I just want my family to work.

I didn’t even have to wonder about who left the note and flowers. Not when they were sure they’d included a photo of themself, Carlos and… Their daughter.
